Our guide on what to enjoy in the Bay Area this week: November 13-19, 2014.
Napa Valley Film Festival
The festival has started and runs through Sunday with a lot of exciting events focused on movies, food and wine tasting. Do-not-miss food/drink films include East Side Sushi and the Tenth Anniversary of Alexander Payne’s Sideways with Merlot tastings. See last week’s preview article here. Sunday Supper at Penrose
Charlie Hallowell has created an Oakland group of favorite dining places in Pizzaiolo, Boot & Shoe and most recently Penrose, surely one of the prettiest restaurants around. Ever community-minded, Charlie has started a series of monthly Sunday Suppers benefiting local nonprofits. They rotate between several East Bay establishments, and this Sunday the site is Penrose on Grand Avenue in Oakland. The Creative Growth Art Center is the beneficiary. The 5:30 pm seating is sold out, but some tickets are still available for the 8 pm dinner. We’ve had a sneak peek at the menu, and it looks amazing.

Join him for Dennis Muren: Master of Visual Effects, screenings at the Smith Rafael Film Center of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) (rare 35mm print), The Thief of Bagdad (1940), AI Artificial Intelligence , (2001) and a rare, never-before-released 3D presentation of Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002 & 2012).
