“CAKE PICNIC™ was born out of a simple desire to eat a lot of cake. And be surrounded by friends,” writes founder Elisa Sunga. “It is a gathering for the love of cake. It celebrates cake in all of its forms — chiffon cakes, upside down cakes, Princess cakes, Russian honey cakes, meringue cakes, jello cakes, trifles, multi-tiered cakes, sponge cakes, butter cakes, and more.
“CAKE PICNIC brings communities and friends together for the sole purpose of breaking cake and enjoying the following butter and sugar highs. To be surrounded by as many cakes as there are humans is definitely something special, right? It is a moment in time where we come together for something truly sweet. It is a feast for the ages and you have to be there.”
Local photographer Klyde Java was at the Legion of Honor on March 29, 2025 taking pictures of some of the 1,387 cakes.
Here he offers a selection (more can be found in Noma Faingold’s “Let Us Eat Cake.“)
